Obituary for Steven Arthur Murray

While the world may seem a little dimmer, the universe is now brighter as Steven Arthur Murray, 61, of Bridgeton, Michigan, left this world and joined his place among the stars with family surrounding him on March 17, 2019.   Steve was born August 13, 1958 to Ron and Doris (Throop) Murray.  He graduated from Grant High School in 1975 and spent time travelling the world and working various jobs.  Most notably were the years he spent working with and alongside his father, developing his skills in wood, metal, and machine working. He became disabled due to medical complications from diabetes which ultimately led to the removal of both legs and his left arm.  He often said that he would give anything to feel the sand between his toes again and encouraged others to not take the small things in life for granted. Steve is survived by his daughters: Monique (Dawn) Murray, Dylan Hanshue, and Anna (Dustin) Ingersoll; grandchildren: Skylar Foster, Gauge, Keenan, and Kyzer Ingersoll, Shannon, Sayer and Sean Molina; sisters: Luanne (Dennis) Nelson and Sara (Dave) Martin; brother Dan (Nancy) Murray; best friends Dan Clement (Clem) and Charlie Riggs, as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Steve was an avid Jeeper who enjoyed participating in the Jeep Blessing and a member of the Cadillac Jeepers where he met lifelong friends. He was known around the town of Grant for his unique fondness for his 1961 Willy’s Jeep which he bought when he was 16 and continued to drive throughout his life. Residents of Newaygo and neighboring counties may also recall him driving the flower covered 1983 Jeep Scrambler, as it tended to cause the occasional head turn. He also enjoyed reading Stephen King novels, polishing rocks for friends and family, and listening to Detroit Tigers games (while working in his garage) and a wide array of music, such as The Beatles, Tom Petty, Cat Stevens, The Cranberries, and more.   Some would say he walked to the beat of his own drum, never in a hurry to get anywhere, but once there, enjoyed conversing with those around him.  He had a warm smile, a listening ear, an intellectual mind, and a stellar sense of humor.  His legacy will go on and the memories will remain as his family and friends recall his inspirational, humbling, and stubborn personality.  It was his wish to forego a memorial service, but rather to have a celebration of life that will take place on his favorite day of the year, the Summer Solstice.  We will be honoring this wish on June 21, 2019 at Blanche Lake in Grant, Michigan from 4:00-8:00 pm.  We will be celebrating this day as he would, BBQ style with hamburgers and hotdogs.  Family would appreciate guests bringing a dish to share if possible.  In lieu of flowers, cards, or donations, family is asking that we all take time to smell the lilacs, feel the sand between our toes and enjoy the little things in life as Steve did.
