Obituary for Charles Gregory Portell

Portell, Charles G. “CHARLIE” 4/13/52 - 9/11/19, Kent City Age 67, passed away on September 11, 2019 after a short diagnosis of cancer. Charlie was born in Fremont and raised in Grant. He worked at S. D. Warren Co. (papermill) in Muskegon for 24 years, then as a plumber for NWK Mechanical in Cedar Springs until his retirement. Charlie was involved in community events and was a volunteer firefighter. For several years he has been the Sons of the Kent City American Legion Post 123 Adjutant. He enjoyed life ~ in his younger years spending time with the Kelly boys at their cottage at Sand Lake. Later on, racing snowmobiles, racing standardbred horses, camping and enjoying time at the Craig's cabin in Bitely and Hanna Camp in Crystal Falls. Reading newspapers, history books, documentaries of WWI and WWII, MASH, baseball and hockey were his daily pastimes as well as coffee at Cooper's Greenhouse, conversation at The Meat Shack and chewing the fat with his friend Tim Hanna. Charlie was a man of family responsibility. Charlie is survived by his wife, Mary of 46 years, his sons Kyle (Jamie) and Joe (Jen); grandchildren Keegan, Jack, Adrianna and Briar; brothers Richard (Diana) and Harold (Lisa); in-laws Steve and Ruthann Stream, Jack and Margaret Hoffman, many nieces and nephews. Family that preceded him were his parents, Eddie & Maxine; in-laws Pete and Ruth Cavanaugh, Paul and Mary Cavanaugh, Riley and Pam Cavanaugh and niece Tracy Stream. The family would like to thank our friends and family for your support and help during Charlie's last few weeks with us and the good care of Faith Hospice. Per his wishes, a gathering/luncheon will be held at the Kent City American Legion, 14111 Ball Creek Road, Kent city @ 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5th. A short remembrance will be given at that time. Memorial contributions: Kent City Fire Dept, P.O.
