Obituary for Adolph Albert Steil IV

Adolph Albert Steil IV, “Albert,” “Al,” “Skip,” 82, of Newaygo, passed away on December 4, 2018 in Fremont, Michigan. He was born June 13, 1936 to Adolph Albert Steil III and Teresa (Roberts) Doran in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Al was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Glenn Steil, Marv Boogaard, and Richard Steil; and son Craig Steil. Al is survived by his children Deborah (Michael) Koster of Gladstone, David (Tamara) Steil of Grandville, daughter-in-law Michelle (Craig) Steil, Linda (Donald) VanPortfliet of Greenville, Daniel (Jennifer) Steil of Grand Rapids; 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and former wife Geri Ellinger, mother of his 5 children. He is also survived by siblings Patricia Graverson, Evelyn Cronk, Ada Howell, Susan Steil, Diane (Noverto) Maltos, Mary Ellen Linington, Michael (Lynn) Steil, Carol Thompson, Steve Boogaard; his partner Sherry Davis also of Newaygo, and her sons Timothy (Casey) Davis and Sean (Paula) Davis. Al graduated from Union High School in 1954 and earned his Masters Degree at Aquinas College. Al taught History, English Literature, and Journalism at Byron Center High School and Catholic Central High School. He also coached football, basketball, golf at Byron Center High School and cross country and basketball at Catholic Central High School. He also taught at Davenport University. He was known for his dramatic teaching style and compassion shown to those who were having a rough time. Many family members have had the experience of meeting his former students who claim Mr. Steil was “the best teacher they ever had.” Al also taught Godwin Regional Adult Educational Training (GREAT) and was awarded Outstanding Adult Education instructor of Michigan in 1970. In 1987 he was selected Teacher of the Year. Al was active in the Grand Rapids Historical Society and was Trustee and President of the Newaygo County Mental Health Board. An avid sports fan, Al especially enjoyed following U of M football and Detroit Tigers baseball. Other favorites were peanut butter, Braunschweiger sandwiches, cold beer and a good laugh. And the scent of lilacs. Al loved drama and all the world was his stage. Al's favorite song was “My Way” sung by Frank Sinatra. Grandpa Al truly loved Christmas in a big way and would spend time year round shopping for treasures for his grandchildren and planning Santa Claus visits at his annual family Christmas party. Visitation for Al will be held from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Friday, December 28 at Fields-McKinley Funeral and Cremation Services, 226 State Road, Newaygo, Michigan 49337. In true Al “Style,” his cremains will be interred on Mackinac Island in the spring since he had the foresight to snag one of the last possible historical burial sites allowed there. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, December 29 at 11:00 am at Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church, 599 West Brooks Street, Newaygo with Father Steve Geerling officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Newaygo County Mental Health. Please share your memories of Al Steil online at www.fieldsmckinley.com.
