William Franklin Gross, Jr., 80, of Newaygo, passed away on June 1, 2008, at Transitional Health Services of Fremont. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 11, 1927, to William Franklin Gross, Sr. and Viola (Hyser) Gross. He married Betty Lou Wildey on October 4, 1947. He is survived by his wife Betty, his son Steven (Susan), and his brother Douglas (Lola) Gross of Three Rivers, Michigan. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Robert, George, and Edward.

Bill worked as a Class A machinist for 24 years at Newaygo Engineering Company and then retired from General Motors on October 31, 1989, after working there for 18 years. He was a volunteer fireman for the Newaygo Fire Department for nine years during the 1960s.

A veteran, Bill served in the army during World War II from December 20, 1945, to May 29, 1947. He was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital where he was a medical technician. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM from the McKinley Funeral Home, Newaygo Chapel on Thursday, June 5, 2008 with Rev. Judy Corey officiating. Interment in Newaygo Cemetery. Visitation will be held 7-9 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
