To the Atwood Family, My daughter Elaina was in room 7423 since Tues, the room right next to Shay's, and was still in the hospital the night he passed away. I woke to find your family gathered in the hallway, and right away knew it couldn't have been good. I remember seeing Shay being pushed around the hallway in his wheelchair, and my older daughters remember seeing him playing with a remote control truck. It saddens me to hear of your loss, and see his face on the news, thinking it was just a couple days ago that I saw him in person. May God's peace and comfort be with you all during this very difficult time. And may you always see Shay in your memories of the wonderful years you had with him and the marks he left behind! Pam and John, we met at Devos Childrens Hosptial when are son, Kaden had open heart surgery. You took us under your wing and helped us through a very tough time in our lives. You don't know me but I would like to say that I am sorry you are having to go through this pain in your life. My husband and I lost our 19 year old son three years ago. We have now formed a grief support group for parents that have lost a child and we would like to invite you to join us. It is in Muskegon, which may be a little distance, I know. I was touched by your son's announcement in the Peru Tribune because I too have a Shay Christopher. He is 5. It's not a common way to spell Shay for a boy, and I thought it might bring you a little sunshine that there is another Shay Christopher with Hoosier ties that is 110% boy. You may not remember me but I was a Grand Rapids Community College nursing student who helped care for Shay for two days in February. I just wanted to say that I learned so much from him in those two days. I learned about perseverance, hard work and that little steps forward amount to a lot of progress. I will never forget Shay and I wanted you to know that he made an impact on my life and I know that it will change the way I give care as a nurse in the future. He was a wonderful boy and you have my sincerest condolences.
